Pass the Pigs World Championship & Uley Brewery ‘UB40’ Beer Festival — Sat, 6 September 2025, 12:00 pm–11:00 pm

The Red Lion & Uley Brewery present the inaugural (we think) Pass the Pigs World Championship, in conjunction with a beer festival at the pub to celebrate Uley’s 40 years of brewing.

Read on for beer information, entry details, and the rules.

The Beers

We’re celebrating Uley Brewery’s fortieth anniversary in style by partnering with them to put on this inaugural event. There will be a mini-beer festival with six of their beers (four specially-brewed for this year’s celebrations, and two of their excellent regulars):

  • Crossbreed, 4%, a one-off brew in collaboration with Charles Faram and their English hop development programme, using a brand new hop.
  • Gilty Pleasure, 4.5% copper, rounded and fruity premium English beer featuring Bramling Cross, originally brewed to celebrate the 60th and 70th anniversaries of the Glorious Glosters at the Battle of Imjin River
  • Boarbeer of Seville, 4% amber/golden, something Uley Brewery has never done before. Expect a beer with hints of orange, The main hop will be Admiral.
  • Severn Boar, 6.2% copper, brewed using Bramling Cross, Severn Boar is a strong, mellow beer with long-lingering fruity characteristics synonymous with Uley Beers. Fruity with a smooth and fruity finish.
  • Uley Pale, 3.8%, a refreshing, light, thirst quenching pale ale. Floral notes on the aroma with hints of vanilla and fruit in the mouth. The finish is notably bitter and long. With well- balanced characteristics of Slovenian, American and UK hops.
  • Pigs Ear, 5%, once awarded CAMRA Champion Beer of Gloucestershire this deceptively strong pale ale is eminently quaffable. The delicate hop aroma develops into a vibrantly fruity, smooth finish.

Rules

The first pig will be thrown at 12:30pm.

The tournament will either take place as a ’round robin’, with a point awarded to the winner, or as a straight knockout, this will depend on numbers and will be confirmed nearer to the time.

First Pigger to reach 100 points wins; you do not need to score exactly 100 points to win.

Pigs must be thrown together, in an upwards motion, and must land within the playing field. If either or both fall outside of the playing field, both pigs must be rethrown.

Agree the score from the throw with your opponent and record it on your personal scoresheet.

Throw as many times as you wish, but if you Pig Out you’ll lose all your points from that turn.

If you thrown Makin’ Bacon your entire score from the match will be reset to zero.

When you decide to finish your turn, add up your score and record it on the match scoresheet.

Any disputes should be referred, without touching the pigs, to the Grand Pigmeister, whose decision will be final.

If you throw a Piggyback, you are automatically eliminated and must buy the Grand Pigmeister a drink, for it is a totally unnatural position for pigs.

We are not playing the Hog Call rule variation.
