News: In memory of Pete Hodge, and details of his funeral
The Swing Rioters have become our go-to way to see out Christmas Eve, and this year is no exception. We’ve also got the added bonus of welcoming violinist Tetiana Hnilytska, who played with the Odesa Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra from 2006 to 2022, before the war in Ukraine cut her career short. She’s still playing, and still touring (in Germany and Poland in December), but is also happy to switch classical music with … punk folk. And why not?
Punk folk. What more do you need to know? Foot-stomping fun, but taking inspiration from their namesakes – the agricultural workers of the 1830s who destroyed threshing machines and other agricultural machinery across southern and eastern England in protest against low wages and punitative tithes – they perform with passion and humour, playing a mixture of their own music and old folk songs, many with a powerful message of their own.
